Protecting Your Hair and Skin from the Harsh New Zealand Sun

Protecting Your Hair and Skin from the Harsh New Zealand Sun

It’s no secret that the Kiwi sun is harsh. With the hole in the ozone layer right above New Zealand, we’re exposed to stronger UV rays than most places on Earth. That extra-intense sunshine might make summer days feel amazing, but it can wreak havoc on your hair and skin if you’re not protected.

Dry, brittle, and dull hair, faded colour, dehydrated skin, sunburn, and pigmentation — these are all common signs of UV damage. Over time, excessive sun exposure can even lead to premature ageing and increase the risk of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer.

Everyone Needs Sun Protection – No Matter Your Skin Tone

A common misconception is that people with darker skin tones don’t need sunscreen. While darker skin may not burn as easily, it’s still vulnerable to UV damage. In New Zealand’s strong sun, everyone needs daily sun protection to reduce the risk of long-term cell damage and keep their skin healthy.

The Best Sunscreen for New Zealand Conditions

Avoiding direct sunlight between 10 am and 4 pm during summer is ideal, but that’s not always practical. That’s where sunscreen comes in — and choosing the right one can make all the difference.

There are two main types of sunscreen:

  • Chemical sunscreens – lightweight formulas that absorb UV rays and convert them into heat.

  • Mineral (or physical) sunscreens – slightly thicker creams that reflect UV rays away from the skin.

Whichever formula you prefer, make sure it’s broad spectrum, offering protection against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

How to Apply Sunscreen Properly

Application matters just as much as the formula. Here’s a quick guide:

  • Face, neck, and ears: half to three-quarters of a teaspoon.

  • Full body: about a shot glass worth.

  • Reapply every two hours, especially if swimming, sweating, or outdoors for long periods.

And yes, your foundation with SPF is a bonus — but it’s not enough on its own. Makeup rarely provides full coverage or adequate protection, so always apply sunscreen first and treat your foundation as a top-up. Our favourite simple, non-greasy sunblock is the Dermablock SPF50+ Sunscreen- available online and in-store.

Check Your UV Protection with Our Skin Analysis Technology

Not sure if your sunscreen is doing its job? At Hair Art & Beauty Christchurch, our OBSERV Skin Analysis can show exactly how well your sunscreen blocks UV rays. This advanced imaging system helps you see what’s happening beneath the surface of your skin, so you can protect it more effectively.

Ask about a skin consultation or OBSERV analysis at your next appointment — we’ll help you find the best products and daily habits to keep your skin healthy all year round.

Don’t Forget Your Hair

Your hair needs UV protection too. Prolonged sun exposure can fade colour, break down the hair’s protein structure, and strip away moisture. Using UV-protective hair products or a leave-in treatment with SPF can help maintain shine, colour, and strength.

If you’re unsure which products are best for your hair type, our team can recommend La Biosthetique’s sun care range, designed specifically for New Zealand’s intense climate. We currently have our Soleil Suncare Christmas Pack in stock (limited quantities!) with a full-size After Sun Hair & Body Shampoo, a full-size After Sun Hydrating Hair Mask, and then complimentary travel-size versions of both!
