Choosing a Hair Colour That Suits You

Change can be a little daunting – especially when it comes to something as personal as your hair. So it’s no surprise that 48% of women have had the same hair colour for five years or more, and 43% say they feel stuck in a rut.

But if you're ready for a new hue, you might be wondering: "How do I know what colour will actually suit me?". Here’s the secret: your natural colouring and undertones are your best guide.

Start by taking a look at your wrist. If your veins appear blue or purple, chances are you’ve got cool undertones. If they lean more green, you’re likely warm-toned. And if you’re squinting trying to decide, or see a mix of both, your undertones are probably neutral. You can also take a cue from jewellery — gold tends to flatter warm tones, silver suits cooler complexions, and if you wear both easily, you’re probably neutral.

Your natural hair colour is another great clue. It’s usually in harmony with your skin tone and eye colour, so it’s a really smart starting point when deciding how dark or light to go. Staying within one to two levels of your natural shade helps keep the look soft, flattering, and low-maintenance.

Your eyes can also offer some inspiration when selecting a shade. Green eyes usually look stunning with red-based colours like strawberry blonde, copper, and auburn, while blue eyes lend themselves to icy blonde, cool ashy tones, and beige-y brunettes. Honey blondes and golden browns enhance hazel eyes, while golden, toffee and caramel colours make brown eyes shine.

That said, there are no hard and fast rules. It’s all about what makes you feel most confident and beautiful.
